Locking technology requirements for hotel buildings

Published on 03.02.2025 by Sina Luckhardt

Nowadays, hotels are required to offer their guests not only a high level of comfort, but also maximum security. The requirements for locking technology in hotel buildings are therefore varied and complex. From access control and the integration of smart technologies through to user-friendliness - the right locking solution plays a decisive role in ensuring smooth operation and the guest experience. In the following interview, WILKA Elektronik Product Manager Eric Nicolas explains the special requirements for locking technology for the trade magazine Hotelbau.

Access security is important in every property. What security standards does a hotel require?

A hotel has the particular characteristic that guests have high expectations of security, but at the same time want to move around the complex as freely as possible. This is where the balance between security and freedom must be found.

What are the most common security gaps in the hotel industry?

The most common security loopholes usually lie with people, and in this case with the guests themselves. After a short time, they believe they are in a safe place and make "rookie mistakes". Sometimes just out of politeness towards other "supposed" guests.

Which technologies and solutions can counteract the security gaps mentioned?

All important or security-relevant doors should lock automatically and may only be opened with the correct key. Electronic locking systems are best suited for this. Transponders, such as cards, wristbands or key fobs, can be activated for several areas as required and only when they are used (e.g. underground car park, wellness area, meeting or conference rooms). Access authorisations can also be revoked very quickly if the access card is lost.

Automation and digitalisation, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies, are playing an increasingly important role in access security. What advantages and disadvantages does this have for the hotel industry?

These technologies must not interfere too intrusively in the guest's life, otherwise the guest will feel uncomfortable. For example, AI could be used to determine when the guest has just had breakfast or left the hotel so that the staff can clean the room. The technologies also offer hoteliers the opportunity to find guests more quickly if they are looking for them. Is the guest still in the hotel, and if so, in which area?

Automation and digitalisation mean that systems can now be linked together. How can access control be combined with the other building technology in a hotel property and what benefits does this offer the operator?

There are numerous building automation applications that can be linked together. For example, the air conditioning system or the charging station for electric cars can be controlled using new technologies. Smart and therefore more efficient energy management not only enables cost savings, but also sustainable operational management, as resources such as water and energy can be utilised more efficiently. The combination of a locking system with a monitoring system significantly increases protection for property and guests. Such systems also offer the opportunity to increase customer and guest loyalty, e.g. through smooth check-in and check-out processes and customised guest experiences.

As a manufacturer of locking technology solutions, we work closely with the smart home expert ROCKETHOME to combine and implement these systems in the best possible way.
