Essen University Hospital

Secure access control perfectly individualised

Hospitals these days are like small towns. Not only are there often several thousand employees, but usually more than 100,000 patients also come and go every year. To ensure security, access control must also function perfectly. The WILKA easy solution offers electronic access with individual authorisations.

Around 450 employees have access to the building at Essen University Hospital's research centre, but of course not everyone is allowed in everywhere. The sensitive laboratory areas, for example, may only be accessed by a few authorised persons.

The electronic access solution e-Link from WILKA enables the definition of different groups, who can be provided with relevant authorisations. Individual, personal authorisations are of course also possible. A reliable electronic locking system consisting of electronic cylinders and readers can be set up with minimal installation work. Up to 64,000 users and cylinders can be integrated into one system.

Facility manager Ingrid Lubjuhn was immediately convinced: "I would love to have all the doors in the building fitted with this system, because it is reliable and easy to use."

The use of individual access media can be tracked using the management software. Unusual movements are immediately noticeable. Online readers are installed at central entrances, i.e. readers that are connected to the operating or server PC via the TCP/IP network in the building. All other access areas can be equipped with electronic, battery-operated cylinders, door fittings or readers without an online connection.

There are essentially no time restrictions on access in Essen, as research is carried out individually, i.e. during the day and often also at night or on weekends and public holidays. There is a special arrangement for the cleaning staff, who work in the centre at fixed times every day. They collect a master key with a transponder from the central gate, and each handover is documented.

"We think we have chosen the right system with the electronic locking system from WILKA, because it is perfectly tailored to our security needs and can easily grow as the building expands," summarises the facility manager.

WILKA offers a wide range of different cylinder types. The electronic cylinders are available as knob cylinders with electronic authorisation on one side, as double knob cylinders with electronic authorisation on both sides and as half cylinders for installation in switching locks, key switches, lifts or as special solutions for escape routes with anti-panic locks in accordance with EN 179/1125 and fire doors.

The user receives the signal for access authorisation visually via the multi-coloured illuminated LED ring and acoustically via a short buzzing sound. Thanks to protection class IP67 (except the fire protection version and E201: IP54), the cylinders are also suitable for outdoor use under adverse conditions. Thanks to the modular design, the cylinders can be customised to any individual door situation, including on site in the event of subsequent changes.
